Great Exuma Island, Bahamas

All about the Exumas

The Exuma islands are a string of islands and cays that form a pearl necklace of long forgotten hideaways, natural harbors and secluded beaches. The islands span over a hundred miles of clear blue water--a new island for every day of the year. Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is one of the largest underwater and land preserves in the world.

The Exuma Islands

Once historically abundant with pirates, now most are uninhabited, quiet, and privately owned. The average year round temperature is 78 degrees. Exuma is located 35 miles southeast of Nassau, and just 90 minutes by air from Miami International Airport.

The two largest islands, Great Exuma Island and Little Exuma Island, are located at the far southern tip of the chain and play host to much of the province's commerce and tourism. The capital of the Exumas is Georgetown, home to the Family Island Regatta in late April, a world famous, three day, colorful boating event. The exquisite sugar, white beaches, the crystal-blue waters and the lush tropical greenery attracts people from around the globe. Tropic of Cancer Beach is located here and is frequently deserted. Visitors have been known to call it the most beautiful stretch of land on The Exumas.

On the Exuma Islands there are various places to visit, activities to do, and cays to explore. For many years, boating was the only way to access the beautiful islands, and still today, remains one of the most enjoyable and scenic ways to enjoy the breath-taking scenery of The Bahamas. The Bahamas has the clearest waters in the world with visibility of over 200 ft (61 meters.) Fishing is a popular sport in the Exumas, from fly-fishing, bonefish, sailfish, marlin, and many more.

The population of The Exumas is approximately 7000 people. A walk of Exuma's friendly, bougainvillea-draped streets brings you into a world far from the noise and stresses of 20th century life. There is no traffic, stoplights or crime. In Exuma, people do not even lock their doors.

Fresh pineapple, tomatoes, guava, sweet mangoes, avocados and pigeon peas are the pride of the island and are exported nationwide. The Exumas also claim bragging rights to their place in Hollywood, having twice been the location for James Bond films-more than any other island in The Islands of The Bahamas.
